From Agency to the Lives of Slaves: A Biographical Turn in Brazilian Historiography


The priority given to police and judicial archives and the new recognition of Africa’s role in the tension inherent to Atlantic slaveholding society were two of the principal "turns" in research on slavery in Brazil over the past twenty-five years. This has led to an unexpected result that has emerged forcefully in the last decade: The rise of biography as a mode of historical analysis. How can someone who, by legal statute, was only an object to be bought and sold, become the main character in a story that sees his existence as a succession of conscious choices and the judgments, thoughts, sensations, and feelings that influenced those choices or accompanied them, and for which traces remain?
