Ariela J. Gross is Visiting Professor of Law at Stanford Law School, the John B. and Alice R. Sharp Professor of Law and History at the University of Southern California, and Co-Director of the USC Center for Law, History, and Culture. Her most recent book, What Blood Won’t Tell: A History of Race on Trial in America (Harvard UP 2008), was cowinner of the James Willard Hurst Prize from the Law and Society Association, winner of the Lillian Smith Award for the best book on the U.S. South and the struggle for racial justice, the American Political Science Association’s Best Book on Race, Ethnicity, and Politics, and a Choice Outstanding Academic Title. Gross is also the author of Double Character: Slavery and Mastery in the Antebellum Southern Courtroom (Princeton UP 2000). She is currently working on a study of race, law and conservatism in post-World War II America, as well as a book on the comparative history of law, race, and slavery in the Americas with Cuban historian Alejandro de la Fuente of Harvard University.  She has published articles on the law and politics of race and the memory of slavery in the United States and France, and on race, law and comparative history.  Her research has been supported by the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Huntington Library. She teaches Contracts, History of American Law, and various courses on race, slavery, and citizenship.
